Wahine on Waves hit Northern Makarori Beach this Wednesday evening in Gisborne.
More than 50 girls/ladies gathered to participate in Wahine on Waves, the sessions registrations filled up fast and we had to turn away alot of wahine that were keen to be a part of the action.
The evening started off with a sun shower followed by a beautiful big rainbow, an interesting way to kickstart the session.
The waves were pretty poor with a 1 to 2ft of on shore conditions, the wind was pretty mild and the water nice and warm so there was plenty of fun to be had, even in the small waves.
The ages of participants ranged from 5 to 45years and loads of younger girls this session. Varying abilities but the waves were small so everyone just goofed around in the small waves.
A few of the girls caught their first waves surrounded by local helpful coaches hooting in the background. Whoop whoop.
A special thanks to all the volunteer coaches, alot of local experienced surfers including the local ripping gromettes Abi Daunton, Abby Falwasser Logan, Jasmine Smith and Dayna Story, and Grom Tom Dixon Smith.

I was really amazed at the turnout, everyone had such a fantastic few hours and it really shows how events like these are a draw card to aspiring surfettes’ all we do is provide the date, and the location, have a fun warm up, break into groups of abilities and head on out into the water to get on our boards, giving tips along the way. It is really fun to have everyone together at one time enjoying our beautiful surroundings, the waves and the camaraderie amongst all the wahine. I love it, I have met so many new friends and over the years watched the girls progress and become more confident.

For those that didn’t have boards or wetsuits we had plenty to borrow, big thanks to Gary Quinn from the Okitu Store for this huge contribution to Wahine on Waves, also to all the wonderful sponsors for whom it would not be possible:

Blitz Surf Shop for taking registrations, Surfkini Australia for beautiful Bikini Spot prizes, Surfers Skin, Eastland Trader, Vonzipper, Go Bamboo, Kt Orthodontics, MF Pilates, Raza Surf School, Gisborne Boardriders Club for the Sausage Sizzle, Beyond the Blue ( Gina your a legend ), Salt Gypsy and Susie Gibson Graphic Design, Phil Yeo and Don Pearson for the photo’s.
Thanks to everyone involved to all the Mums for bringing their kids to the beach and we look forward to seeing you on March 13th.
